REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY AND PARKS AND RECREATION <br /> <br /> DATE: February 22, 2007 RE: Communication No. 143 <br /> <br /> PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa <br /> 78-128 Ehukai Street <br /> Kailua-Kona, Hawaii <br /> <br /> TIME: 9:00 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Pazks and Recreation, to which was referred <br /> Communication No. 143, reports as follows: <br /> Communication No. 143, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated January 23, 2007, submits for <br /> confirmation the appointment of Mr. Michael Sumja of Council District 9 to the County of <br /> Hawaii Police Commission. <br /> Mr. Sumja is an 8-yeaz resident of Hawaii and is currently employed by the County of Hawaii <br /> Depaztment of Reseazch and Development as a community facilitator. He is a past president of <br /> the Kohala Senior Citizens Club and a past chairman of the Kohala Coalition Against Drugs. He <br /> served as a commissioner on both the County of Hawai`i's Transportation Commission and the <br /> Tax Board of Review; both commissions expired on December 31, 2006. Mr. Sumja is also a <br /> member of the Democratic party. If confirmed, he will replace Mr. James A. Frazier, whose <br /> term expired on December 31, 2006. <br /> Your Committee spoke in support of Mr. Sumja, who was present at the meeting. Corporation <br /> Counsel Lincoln Ashida asked whether or not Mr. Sumja had to appear before the full Council for <br /> the final vote.
