As <br /> a parent of students at Waimea Middle School, a Hawaiian Homestead organic farmer, Waimea Homestead <br /> Farmers Market vendor, and seventeen year resident of Hawaii Island I see the school gardens program as an <br /> important catalyst in helping our youngsters to understand their relationship to this unique place, the importance <br /> of understanding how their food is produced and their part in producing food, and opening their eyes to the <br /> possibility of being a part of an agricultural lifestyle that this island certainly can support. This kind of community <br /> support of our children's education is an indication of the need to help our children become participants in <br /> producing food and gardens and not merely observers to one of life's basic needs.
