No. 668 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Kona, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 4:07 p.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 668, reports as follows: <br /> Communication No. 668,transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated January 29, 2014, requests review <br /> and favorable recommendation of the nomination of Dr. Ku Kahakalau to the Board of Ethics. <br /> Dr. Ku Kahakalau is a 37-year resident of Hawai`i. She is presently the Project Director for Basic Hawaiian, <br /> a program of the Institute for Native Pacific Education and Culture. She is also the Director of KU-A- <br /> KANAKA Indigenous Research Institute and the owner of Ku I Ka Maria Music Publishing. <br /> In addition, Dr. Kahakalau is currently a board member of the North Hawai`i Educational Research Center's <br /> Heritage Center, the Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems Institutional Review Board, and the Center for <br /> World Indigenous Studies. She states that she is not affiliated with any political party. If confirmed, <br /> Dr. Kahakalau will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2018. <br /> Ms. Charmaine Shigemura, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kenoi, came forward and provided background <br /> information, expressed the Mayor's support, and requested Council's favorable action of this appointment. <br /> Dr. Kahakalau expressed her gratitude and stated that it is an honor to be considered to serve on the Board of <br /> Ethics. <br /> Several Council Members expressed their support of the nominee's appointment. <br /> Dr. Kahakalau is not required to be present at full Council for final confirmation. <br /> Pursuant to Article XIV, Section 14-5, Hawai`i County Charter, there shall be a Board of Ethics appointed by <br /> the Mayor with the approval of the Council. <br /> Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Comm.No. 668, and recommends <br /> confirmation of the appointment of Dr. Kahakalau to the Board of Ethics. <br /> sc <br /> AYES NOES ABS EX Respectfully submitted, <br /> EOFF X <br /> FORD X COMMITTEE ON FINANCE <br /> ILAGAN X <br /> KANUHA X <br /> KERN X 1 2 <br /> : <br /> ONISHI X <br /> POINDEXTER X VALERIE T.
