REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PLANNING <br /> REGARDING: Communication No. 999 <br /> DATE: September 16, 2014 <br /> LOCATION: Council Chambers, Kona, Hawai`i <br /> TITLE: NOMINATION OF DONALD IKEDA TO THE WINDWARD PLANNING <br /> COMMISSION <br /> EXPLANATION: Communication dated August 21, 2014, from Mayor William P. Kenoi, <br /> submitting for the Council's review and confirmation of Mr. Ikeda's nomination. <br /> A motion to approve nomination was made by Mr. Onishi and seconded by Mr. <br /> Kanuha. Executive Assistant to the Mayor, Ms. Charmaine Shigemura, <br /> introduced nominee via videoconferencing from Hilo Council Chambers. <br /> Mr. Ikeda is a lifelong resident of Hawai`i. He was employed by the County of <br /> Hawai`i from 1992 to 2012, serving as a member of the Hawai`i County Council <br /> from 2004-2012. Mr. Ikeda is the past president of Kaumana Elementary School <br /> and past treasurer of Hilo Intermediate School. He is also a former member of the <br /> Hawai`i Island Red Cross Disaster team. He states that he is a Democrat and if <br /> confirmed, Mr. Ikeda will serve a term to expire on March 31, 2014. He replaces <br /> Wallace Ishibashi whose term expired on March 31, 2014. <br /> Mr. Ikeda appeared in front of your Committee with an opening comment <br /> appreciating the Mayor for the opportunity to serve. He expressed feeling very <br /> honored to be chosen for this commission because it gives him a chance to put <br /> input as to the growth and direction for East Hawai`i and the island of Hawai`i. <br /> He believes if we don't have growth then the community will die,thus he hopes <br /> to provide some direction so that we may move forward.
