No. 573 PLACE: Council Chambers Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i TIME: 12:10 p.m. Council Chair and Members Hawai`i County Council Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 573, reports as follows: Communication No. 573, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim dated October 24, 2017, nominates Dr. Nan Sumner-Mack of Council District 2 to the County of Hawai`i Board of Ethics. Ms. Rose Bautista, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kim, introduced Dr. Sumner-Mack. Dr. Sumner-Mack is a retired college professor who taught English and History and later taught English in Pahoa and Laupahoehoe. She is an active member of our island community and in the past had served as president of the local AAUW (American Association of University Women), former chair of her local neighborhood watch, and consultant to the Young Women's Christian Association. If confirmed, she will serve to fill a five-year term ending December 31, 2022. Dr. Sumner-Mack stated that it would be an honor to serve on the Board of Ethics. Several Council Members expressed support of Dr. Sumner-Mack's appointment to the commission. Chair Maile David informed Dr. Sumner-Mack that she did not need to appear before the full Council for confirmation and noted same for the record. Section 14-5 of the Hawai`i CountyCharter, there shall be an Ethics Pursuant to Article XIV, Board, which shall consist of five members appointed by the mayor with the approval of the Council.
