<br /> <br />LEEWARD PLANNING COMMISSION <br />COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I <br /> <br />MINUTES <br />OCTOBER 22, 2015 <br /> <br />The Leeward Planning Commission met in regular session at 9:30 a.m. in the West Hawai‘i Civic <br />Center, Community Center, Building G, 74-5044 Ane Keohokālole Highway, Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, <br />with Chair Pro Tem Keith Unger presiding. <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Keith Unger, Scott Church, Collin Kaholo and Sonny Shimaoka <br /> <br />ABSENT AND EXCUSED: Brandi Beaudet (recused), Barbara Nobriga (recused) and <br />Thomas Whittemore <br /> <br />ALSO PRESENT: Danny Patel (Counsel for the Commission), Bobby Command (Deputy Planning <br />Director), Daryn Arai (Planning Program Manager), Jeff Darrow (Planner) and Noriko Sauer <br />(Commission Secretary) <br /> <br />And approximately 80 people from the public in attendance. <br /> <br />A quorum was present. Commissioner Unger called the meeting to order, and introduced the <br />Commissioners and staff to members of the public. He said that in the absence of both Chair Beaudet <br />and Vice Chair Whittemore, chair pro tem had to be elected. Commissioner Church moved to <br />nominate Commissioner Unger, and Commissioner Shimaoka seconded the motion. Commissioner <br />Unger accepted the nomination, and the motion was carried by a unanimous voice vote. <br /> <br />The Chair Pro Tem described the procedure for public testimony. <br /> <br />STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC – No statements were presented under this section of the <br />agenda. <br /> <br />UNFINISHED BUSINESS <br /> <br /> <br />1.APPLICANT: KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS–LAND ASSETS DIVISION–WEST <br />HAWAI‘I (SMA 15-060) <br />Continued hearing on an application for a Special Management Area (SMA) Use Permit to allow <br />for the demolition of the former Keauhou Beach Resort complex and the remnants of the former <br />Kona Lagoon Hotel facility to allow for the construction and establishment of an educational <br />complex (Kahaluʻu Ma Kai) and related programs, activities and improvements on approximately <br />22.73 acres of land situated within the SMA. The properties are situated on the west (makai) side <br />of Aliʻi Drive, immediately adjacent to and south of Kahaluʻu Beach Park at Kahaluʻu, North <br />Kona, Hawai‘i, TMKs: 7-8-013: 002, 013, 042 & 043. <br /> <br />The Commission took up this item at 9:33 a.m. with approximately 80 people from the public in <br />attendance. <br /> <br />(SEE EXHIBIT A) <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />
