ailapa Communication no. 2017-07
NA KILO AINA
(Observers of our Sustenance)
Kawaihae Camp — October 9-13, 2017
Aloha e na makamaka o Kawaihae,
The Kailapa Community Association (and partners) would like to invite you to participate in our
Fifth Annual Na Kilo Aina Camp for South Kohala. The purpose of this camp is to engage our
community members in caring for our shorelines and fisheries working towards a sustainable
future.
Ehuehu i ka pono (Thriving in balance)
Kailapa Community Association VISION
With the high dependency on imported goods and the continued disconnect our people have from
our `aina (lands and oceans) there is a growing concern for the survival of our people living here
on islands that are so dependent on external sources. Our vision, thriving in balance, is a
testament to our desire and hope that we are striving to not simply survive but to thrive.
We hope to broaden and expand on our understanding of place and find ways in which we can
continually contribute to the health and wellness of Kawaihae. Our camp will strengthen our
relationship to place by supporting responsible ocean dwellers/user who will continue to care for our
islands. We will be strengthening the KILO or observer in each of us through various workshops on
mo'olelo, fish and shoreline surveys, lifecycle and reproduction workshops, snorkeling and
shoreline exploration, art and music, canoe culture, sustainable/healthy living, etc. Let's begin the
journey to better understand the many moods and characteristics of South Kohala to achieve a state of
`Aina Momona.
Aina Momona Action Plan
A desire to create and support a community of abundance and prosperity where we understand and
embrace the connectivity, relationships, and dependency we have with our lands, oceans, and each
other. A resilient community engaged and empowered to address the productivity of our community
on all levels (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) shifting our behaviors to be ever present,
conscious, and responsive to the needs of our diverse and unique South Kohala landscapes. We
envision a community moving past a want to survive to a place where we THRIVE.
WHAT: Na Kilo Aina Camp
WHERE: Kawaihae (Puaka'ilima Surf Park)
WHEN: October 9-13 (Monday - Friday of fall intercession)
WHO: Priority to Kawaihae families targeting children 10+ but open to
all families and all ages.
