REQUEST: <br />Pursuant to Hawai'i Revised Statues, Section 46-7, and Hawaii County Charter Article XIII, Section 13-12, <br />the Mass Transit Agency hereby requests a Resolution authorizing the Office of the Mayor to enter into an <br />Agreement with Unitversity of HawaiTs Hawai'i Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) for the acceptance of a <br />Hydrogen bus for the MTA HYDROGEN BUS PROJECT. <br />This bus has an approximate value of $500,000 <br />B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br />The University of Hawaii, Hawaii Natural Energy Institute will donate a 2014 Eldorado Aero Elite, 29 - <br />passenger bus to the County of Hawaii Mass Transit Agency (MTA). MTA will use the bus as part of its <br />public transportation fleet. <br />The County of Hawaii will not be obligated to pay a service and handling fee; just shipping from Oahu to <br />Hawai'i Island. This bus is part of a a research and development project with HNEI to implement, operate <br />and maintain three hydrogen fuel cell zero emission buses for a period of at least two years in Kailua-Kona. <br />See related B-52 Request for Council Action. <br />On August 7, 2019, Resolution No. 215-19 and 239-19 were adopted to authorize our Mayor to enter into an <br />agreement with the State of Hawaii Surplus Property Office for the acceptance of a donation for a total of <br />two 2012 hydrogen buses (formerly belonging to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park) <br />Mass Transit plans to use this bus on the Intra -Kona routes which will help to reduce rental/lease costs, and <br />demonstrate the benefits of operating hydrogen fuel cell zero emission buses.
