Form : B-52 <br /> 7118191 <br /> DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE <br /> REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br /> DEPARMENT: Research and Development DATE: November 29, 2022 <br /> STAFF CONTACT: Sarah Freeman PHONE: 961-8582 <br /> A REQUEST: <br /> This is a request for a resolution to enter into a contract with The Food Basket, a non-profit <br /> organization, for the purpose of supporting The Kokua Harvest Project for $91,500.40. This <br /> program involves the gleaning of fresh produce, creating and selling value-added products <br /> from the produce to reduce food waste, increase the volume of unharvested fruits and <br /> vegetables diverted to local food assistance programs, increase the consumption of local <br /> agricultural products, increase engagement with Hawaii Island's food system, and increase <br /> the program's sustainability. <br /> B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br /> The application, The Kokua Harvest Project, was selected for funding as a result of the <br /> Request for Proposals (RFP) no. 2022-01. <br /> The non-profit, The Food Basket (TFB), is the Principal Investigator for this project. TFB is <br /> the designated Food Bank for Hawaii Island and has over 33 years of food distribution <br /> experience. In 2020, TFB distributed over 6 million pounds of food and served over 80,000 <br /> Hawaii Island residents on a monthly basis, during the COVID-19 pandemic. <br /> Over the grant period of18 months, Kokua Harvest is expected to conduct 315 harvests and <br /> the volunteers will harvest, trim, sort, wash, pack and deliver approximately 41,265 pounds of <br /> gleaned produce for an average of 131 pounds of produce per harvest. <br /> SIGNED: DATE: November 29, 2022 <br /> De meet Head <br />
