Arakaki

Chair and Presiding Officer
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni Street

Hilo, HI 96720
Dear Chair Arakaki:
"Getting Things Done" is the slogan used by our AmeriCorps program,
Students & Advocates for Victims of Domestic Violence (SAND). But it is more
than just words .It's the way we've been doing business in Maui County for the past
three years as we fulfill our mission: "to promote the safety of domestic violence
victims and help prevent domestic violence by legal advocacy ,assistance and
support to victims, and outreach and education to the community and community
agency staff."
In their efforts toward this end, our AmeriCorps Members have met and
exceeded all goals. An impressive total of 5,059 residents statewide received
direct services from our Members. On the Big Island, our Advocate Members are
placed at the .^,ffice of the Prosecuting attorney, at Family Court and Alternatives
to Violence in Hilo, and at Alternatives to Violence in Kona. From these
placements, our Advocates guide abuse survivors through the process of
returning to lives of safety, assist with obtaining restraining orders, and provide
advocacy.
Our Attorney Member is placed at the Hilo office of the Legal Aid Society
of Hawaii, where she provides direct legal service to abuse survivors and their
children, clients who otherwise would not be able to afford the help they need.
iixnca. ila_-.
FI1a 11~.~_._.~~.._~.
ice. 2bt. ____L~~.....-~--.
APR n 8 ~syz
1040 RICHARDS STREET, SUITE 301 HONOLULU, HI 9 t9 116t~-
(808) 528-7046 FAX: (808) 524-2147 (1-800) 839-5200 E-MAIL: hlcvls@aloha.net
Funded by the Hawaii Justice Foundation, the Hawaii State Bar Association, the Weinberg
Foundation, AmeriCorps, the Hawaii Community Foundation and many others
