HAWAII LAWYERS CARE <br /> April 1, 1997 Paget <br /> The Honorable James Y. Arakaki <br /> The benefit of these services is recognized and appreciated by many in Big <br /> Island communities. We are asking the support of each county mayor to help <br /> continue these services in their respective counties. An annual county budget <br /> allocation of $10,000 for SAVD will make it possible for Hawaii County to not <br /> only receive continued services for residents, but also receive additional services <br /> in the form of an AmeriCorps Member placed at a work site determined by the <br /> county in agreement with Hawaii Lawyers Care, to extend services in <br /> prosecuting attorney offices, in the police department, in personnel offices, for <br /> example. <br /> Volunteers commit one year of their life to the program. In return, they <br /> receive a minimum living allowance of $8,200, medical benefits, training and an <br /> educational award of $4,800 after completion of service. AmeriCorps grantees <br /> such as HLC are required to provide a 15 percent cash match for the living <br /> allowances and benefits. In addition, HLC pays all training costs. Partnerships <br /> and matching funds are key components to the success of SAVD. <br /> We know of the things that are "getting done" through SAVD and its <br /> Members. We hope that you, too, think that the potential benefit for increased <br /> <br /> service to residents through such a partnership is deserving of your further <br /> <br /> consideration.
