HAWAII LAWYERS CARE
April 1, 1997 Paget
The Honorable James Y. Arakaki
The benefit of these services is recognized and appreciated by many in Big
Island communities. We are asking the support of each county mayor to help
continue these services in their respective counties. An annual county budget
allocation of $10,000 for SAVD will make it possible for Hawaii County to not
only receive continued services for residents, but also receive additional services
in the form of an AmeriCorps Member placed at a work site determined by the
county in agreement with Hawaii Lawyers Care, to extend services in
prosecuting attorney offices, in the police department, in personnel offices, for
example.
Volunteers commit one year of their life to the program. In return, they
receive a minimum living allowance of $8,200, medical benefits, training and an
educational award of $4,800 after completion of service. AmeriCorps grantees
such as HLC are required to provide a 15 percent cash match for the living
allowances and benefits. In addition, HLC pays all training costs. Partnerships
and matching funds are key components to the success of SAVD.
We know of the things that are "getting done" through SAVD and its
Members. We hope that you, too, think that the potential benefit for increased

service to residents through such a partnership is deserving of your further

consideration. We look forward to discussing our work and its benefits to your

residents in more detail. Please call me at 528-7051.

S' e ly,
y obin
xecu v Director
