1 J 1 ~ , -~L~,.. g 1 ~ ~ r~~ 9 .r } - - 4~Y~ nTgk' photo by Jerry Rothstein taken January 6, 2005 SAVE PEPEEKEO POINT NO VOTE- BILL 356 This is a petition opposing Bill 356, a rezoning ordinance which, if passed, would allow Continental Pacific, LLC to subdivide the old Pepeekeo Mill camp plantation park into eleven residential lots with only a forty foot set back from the edge of the pall. There has been no provisions for an open space park or special accommodations for persons needing convenient access to the shoreline azea in the comprehensive plan to subdivide 1300 acres and four miles of shoreline. The plantation pazk at PEPEEKEO POINT is the last remnant of the historic Pepeekeo Mill plantation community. The Sugar Industry is of significant historical and cultural importance to Hawaii and has contributed substantially to the life of the rural communities. The old camp was abandoned and razed in 1980, yet the old ball park and surrounding shoreline open space has remained an important recreation and scenic area. Pepeekeo Point has been used for fishing, picnicking, and ocean viewing activities continuously for generations. Public access to the former Pepeekeo Sugaz Mill and old camp is recognized in the County of Hawaii Public Shoreline Access Inventory of 1979. The General Plan of 1989 designates the shoreline area as " en: Parks and historic sites." The pali is gently sloping and low, making this the easiest place to access the shoreline for a four mile shoreline azea within the newly created Pepeekeo Makai subdivision.
