Federal Empowerment Zones Councilman Tehada informed the Executive Committee that the U. S. Senate has just amended the eligibility criteria for Federal Empowerment Zones and Enterprise Communities so as to recognize the economically depressed areas and unique characteristics of Hawaii and Alaska. Since the establishment of this program, Hawaii and Alaska have not been able to access funds available to address serious condition of homelessness, substandard housing and lack of economic opportunity. Conference deliberations between the House and Senate on this matter will begin shortly. This matter was for information and placed on file.
