WHEREAS, the Property as a whole forms a beautiful backdrop for Waimea Town that <br /> is enjoyed by residents and visilors alike; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Property is currently owned by the State of Hawaii and leased to <br /> Parker Ranch unti12011 under a pasture lease, and is being utilized as productive grazing land, a <br /> watershed, and a forest reserve buffer zone; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Property is located within the State Land Use Agricultural District; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to section 205-5(b) of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, as amended, <br /> the minimum lot size in agricultural districts shall be determined by each county by zoning <br /> ordinance, subdivision ordinance, or other lawful means; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to section 25-2-43 of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 <br /> Edition, As Amended), amendments to the Zoning Code may be initiated by the Planning <br /> Director; and <br /> WHEREAS, changing the district classification of the Property from Unzoned and <br /> Agricultural (A-la) to an Agricultural (A-SOOa) zoning designation will facilitate the <br /> <br /> preservation of the area's natural beauty and agricultural and recreational uses, and prevent <br /> future residential development of its important cultural and open space resources. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY <br /> OF HAWAII that pursuant to section 25-2-43 of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, <br /> As Amended), the Planning Director is requested to initiate a zoning code amendment for an <br /> ordinance changing the district classification from Unzoned and Agricultural (A-la) to <br /> Agricultural (A-500a) at Waimea, South Kohala, Hawaii, covered by tax map key 6-5-001:020, <br /> in order to preserve the Waimea pu`u as cultural and open space resources and to preserve their <br /> agricultural and recreational uses. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Planning Director is requested to submit such <br /> ordinance to the Hawaii County Council no later than March 1, 2007. <br /> 2 <br /> <br />
