Program Objectives: <br />Overall Goal: To provide 24/7 emergency disaster response and relief to <br />those in need on the Big Island after a disaster (man-made or natural). <br />Objectives: <br />1. Provide for the immediate emergency needs of Big Island disaster <br />victims (food, clothing, shelter, crisis counseling) <br />2. Support first responders like firefighters, police, civil defense, and <br />others with food, water, and counseling during brush fires and other <br />challenging incidents that threaten lives and property <br />3. Increase awareness of disaster preparedness to Big Island residents <br />4. Train Big Island volunteers in Red Cross disaster skills such as <br />disaster assessment, casework, health services, crisis counseling, <br />shelter management and mass care to increase our capacity to <br />respond to disasters on the Big Island. <br />Program Highlights: <br />From July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, the American Red Cross Hawaii <br />County achieved the following: <br />• Responded to 19 disasters on Big Island enabling 43 individuals to <br />recover from their losses and begin rebuilding their lives. Financial <br />assistance in the amount of $18,306 was provided to these families. <br />• Responded and opened 5 shelters due to brushfires. Fortunately, all <br />these shelters were able to close after a few hours and people were <br />able to return to their homes. <br />• Provided training for 60 new disaster volunteers <br />• Distributed 1,110 general disaster preparedness material and <br />brochures, to inform and educate the community on how to be ready <br />and prepared before a disaster strikes <br />• Provided 1,868 Hilo individuals first aid and CPR training, 1,023 <br />individuals with aquatics training and 48 individuals with other health <br />and safety trainings. <br />NONPROFIT GRANT APPLICATION <br />FISCAL YEAR 2007-08 <br />Page 5 <br />
