REQUEST: <br /> <br /> To prepare a resolution to accept $72,138 from the State of Hawaii Department of Health, Tobacco <br /> Settlement Project Office to be used to provide funding for a Balanced Transportation Coordinator position in <br /> the County of Hawaii Planning Department for FY 2008-09, the period between July 1, 2008 through June <br /> 30, 2009. <br /> Also, please prepare a bill for an ordinance to appropriate funds. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br /> <br /> In partnership with the State Department of Health's Healthy Hawaii initiative, the County of Hawaii is <br /> collaborating to increase awareness of the direct relationship between healthy communities and built <br /> environments that ensure and promote bicycle, pedestrian and non-motorized modes of transportation. By <br /> doing so, the intended outcome is to spur on the creation of such environments in our communities. This <br /> position is intended to initiate, coordinate and develop a county-wide program to integrate these alternate <br /> modes of transportation with transit and the traditional vehicular transportation infrastructure. Additionally, <br /> the position will serve as a liaison to multi-model interest as well as serve as project manager for the <br /> planning/pre-construction phases of select roadway projects.
