Form #: B -52
7/18/91
DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DEPARTMENT: Finance - Property Management DATE: June 8, 2010
STAFF CONTACT: Ken Van Bergen PHONE: 961 -8009
A. REQUEST:
Prepare resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into multi -year lease agreements for office space located at
Holomua Center in Waimea, South Kohala, Hawai'i. That sufficient funds be budgeted in future years to cover
the anticipated obligations of the County under the lease agreement.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
The County of Hawai'i proposes to lease additional space at Holomua Center and wishes to enter a multi -year
lease with Starr Equities Inc., a Domestic Profit Corporation, for a term of Four (4) years, Eleven (11) months
with an option of an additional Four (4) years, Eleven (11) months. The proposed lease will be for a total of
approximately 2,400 square feet of office space located at 64 -1067 Mamalahoa Highway where both the
Waimea Prosecutors and County Council offices currently lease existing office space. Approximately 1,200
square feet in Suite B2/B3 will be used by the Vehicle Registration and Licensing (VRL) Division of the
Department of Finance. The Prosecutors Office will move from its current 600 square foot office to a 1,200
square foot space, Suite B -1, (which includes a 180 square foot office to be shared with other County
Departments) adjacent to the new VRL office. The Prosecutors' current month to month lease will be
terminated.
To better serve the public, the VRL division proposes to establish a satellite VRL service center in Waimea to
provide basic vehicle registration and driver's license services.
The Prosecutors' current office is crowded and has no room for expansion. The districts served by the North
Hawai'i office will continue to grow in population. Consequently, the Prosecutors office anticipates a second
attorney and clerical pair will need to be added.
The term of the lease for both spaces shall commence on August 1, 2010 or the date of delivery of the space to
the County, whichever is later.
SIGNED: Li
I / DATE: JUN - 9 2010
•
1 Depart' ent Head
