Honorable Valerie T. Poindexter, Chair and
• Members of the Hawai`i County Council
January 12,2018
Page 4
Kipapa Park continues to provide much needed off street parking along with increased road and
pedestrian safety in the area for residents and visitors who frequent the nearby Magic Sands and Pahoehoe
County Beach Parks. This past year, the community proposed the Bikeshare Docking Station at Kipapa Park.
Its installation provided residents and visitors with another form of commuting. Long-term plans for the
White Sands Mauka parcels are for an expansion of the adjacent Kipapa Park to provide an additional area for
public outdoor recreation. The Kipapa ohana and families of lineal descendants to the area continue to have
clean-up days to clear brush and vegetation. With the Archaeological Inventory Survey completed, we can
look forward to stewardship efforts in preservation, conservation in open spaces.
Ka'u District
Date Acquired Project Tax Map Key Acreage Acquisition Cost Matching Funds
Jan. Townscape, Inc. has
completed their task in a comprehensive management report and has affected the stewarding efforts in a
positive way.
In 2017,Na Mamo 0 Kawa received their first stewarding approval for Kawa and Kawa'a Bay,Ka'u.
Their notable efforts in working with the community and the county reinforce application efforts of the Kawa
Management Plan by Townscape,Inc.
The various surveys for both Kahua Olohu and Kahuku locations have been completed and now ready
for stewarding. Kahuku, the largest PONC acquisition, was known for ancient traditions of honoring the
Hawaiian god of Peace, Lono. One of these traditions is called, "The Makahiki Games" during the season of
the Makahiki, which lasts for four months—usually November through February. The Makahiki games were
the ancient Hawaiian version of the Olympics and contestants included trained athletes, Ali'i and commoners.
These contests helped warriors to stay active, prepare for wartime and also served as training and practice
opportunities for commoners in the event they were called on to fight in the future.
An article by Roberts Hawai`i says, "the winners of each ahupuaa would be invited by the
Ali'i to challenge the champions from other ahupuaa and often had stories and songs written in their
honor. Like the Olympics, these games encouraged good sportsmanship, friendly rivalries and gave
people the opportunity to bring honor to their family and home district." ( (Roberts Hawaii, 2017)
County ofHawai'i is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer.
