Some of them seem to be by statute; some <br /> <br />2 <br />actually have some sort of a grid, recognizing years of <br />3 <br />experience or such, and setting where that salary would <br />4 <br />be. But County of Hawai ʻ i doesn't seem to have any such <br />5 <br />structure. <br />6 <br />MR. KAMELAMELA: Okay. So, that's a good <br />7 <br />question. So, we do have an ordinance which applies to <br />8 <br />our office and the prosecutor's office, you know, where <br />9 <br />the lowest-paid deputy would have to be like 50 percent <br />10 <br />of the higher of either the Prosecutor's or Corp. <br />11 <br />Counsel. And because we don't really have a grid, what <br />12 <br />I actually did is I had looked at the structures that <br />13 <br />Maui and Honolulu has -- and found that Maui County is <br />14 <br />closer to us in terms of salary scale and ranges. And <br />15 <br />so, I had utilized what Maui has, tweaked it a little, <br />16 <br />and so I have a chart that I utilize based on <br />17 <br />experience. <br />18 <br />Now, there is some discretion that's <br />19 <br />involved because some deputies who come on board, you <br />20 <br />may not want to just go with your scale, because if the <br />21 <br />person you bring on board is really good and you want <br />22 <br />to encourage the person to come here, I wouldn't start <br />23 <br />them off at a scale. Maybe I'll go 10, 20 percent of <br />24 <br />the years of experience because I do have attorneys <br />25 <br />like that.
