Whatever you replace it with, I have more <br />3 <br />confidence in a citizens' commission than us saying <br />4 <br />what I deserve or don't deserve. I'm going to ask for <br />5 <br />a million dollars if you leave it up to me. I wouldn't <br />6 <br />do that, but I think you understand the principle. The <br />7 <br />reason for the Commission was to take it away from the <br />8 <br />people that it's going to affect the most. <br />9 <br />And I've said it many, many times. When they <br />10 <br />say raising our salary, I have never spoken to you, the <br />11 <br />Salary Commission, or any commission, in regards to pay <br />12 <br />for or against or more or less. And that's the way it <br />13 <br />should be. You should determine based on all the <br />14 <br />things you need to determine, and no one can override <br />15 <br />you. <br />16 <br />CHAIR: Thank you. <br />17 <br />I agree with that, and I have to disagree <br />18 <br />with my Commission member in the fact that I firmly <br />19 <br />believe that it should be an independent group made up <br />20 <br />of people from the public, just to provide some kind of <br />21 <br />oversight and independent review of what's done. <br />22 <br />One of the things that the -- when one of our <br />23 <br />members was being appointed -- current council chair, <br />24 <br />said, "Well, really, you should wait until it's time <br />25 <br />for new appointments before you give raises."
