4. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame
N. Kelly reported that she drafted a press release, but she was not sure if it was
published in the newspapers. K. Nova said that a nice article was published in
the West Hawaii Today.
C. Ka-ipo reported that she met with the owner of the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort
and they discussed the menu of a prime rib buffet of $36.50 plus a side dish of
chicken or fish for vegetarians. A special room rate of approximately $99 per
night was given for CSW’s guests and members. C. Ka-ipo requested the
Polynesian Room to hold the function since it was recently renovated. She
suggested having the function in September or October when the hotel is slow.
K. Peters stated that CSW traditionally chose September or October because the
economy was booming and that was the time to have it at the Hilton Waikoloa
Village. However, CSW was competing with other events from non-profit
organizations. She asked if CSW wanted to entertain other options that the
committee discussed previously such as alternating the event every other year,
honoring women from West Hawaii (Kau to Kohala) in Waikoloa, and honoring
women from East Hawaii (Kalapana to Honokaa) in Hilo. Furthermore, CSW
discussed increasing attendance and having an audience by entertaining other
ideas.
K. Nova stated that this is the most expensive event sponsored by the
committee. First, CSW needs to look at how important it is to the committee as it
stands now to do this event. Secondly, does CSW want to spend that much
money of the committee’s limited budget every year or every other year?
K. Peters asked if it would be better to get a full page color ad with a biography of
these women in the newspaper in order to honor and highlight them. Young
women will be inspired by the newspaper versus an event at some hotel and few
people show up which is only family and friends. It’s a cost benefit ratio of what
CSW’s money does to inspire and promote these women who have done
remarkable things.
C. Kitaoka raised the issue about the participants paying more to help defray the
cost of the event. K. Nova offered to contact J. Mecklenburg to get an opinion.
C. Ka-ipo suggested changing the dinner to a luncheon and having the event
every other year. K. Nova suggested that CSW members think about it and
determine how the committee can do it in a way that works better.
C. Kitaoka mentioned that she was also thinking about another way to do the
essay contest. She suggested a fun day at the beach rather than a formal
luncheon.
3
