M. Masunaga stated that S. Takato invited her to Japan on July 7-8, 2007 to
provide an update on domestic violence in America and the Teen Dating
Violence Prevention Initiative Program.
2. Legislative Update
No report.
D. Marketing
1. Newsletter
Tabled.
E. Community Reports
S. Newland reported that she had five or six events for Domestic Harmony
Awareness Month in November. She distributed 2,700 bumper stickers and 3,500
ribbons in Puna, Hilo, and Kona. She received good press in the newspapers and
she also did a number of radio interviews. She is generating a safe baby resolution
which is being considered by the Womens Coalition for the legislative package.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Teen Dating Violence Prevention Peer Education Conference
C. Kitaoka reported that there were approximately 130 students and a total of 170
people in attendance. The main speaker, Rae Spence, also spoke at Konawaena
High School on November 6. M. Masunaga said that as a result of R. Spence
talking to these kids, there were two follow up inquiries from teens. On November
10, there was an update on teen dating violence prevention on 20/20 and R. Spence
was featured on the program.
C. Kitaoka mentioned that K. Nova recommended Dr. Jill Murray, a speaker on
warning signs. Dr. J. Murray is a well-known speaker who speaks at schools and
conferences. However, CSW was unable to afford her speakers fees and it wasnt
quitetherightconferenceforhertocometoanyway.C.Kitaokasuggestedthat
CSW obtain Dr. J. Murray as the main speaker at a future conference when more
funding is available.
K. Nova said that CSW could schedule Dr. J. Murray to do as many things as we
want her to do. The committee owns her from the time she gets off the plane until
she gets on the plane. C. Kitaoka will contact Dr. J. Murray and work on getting
corporations to subsidize her speakers fees.
N. Kelly suggested that the Violence Against Women Fund might be able to help
with airfare.
C. Kitaoka reported that the purpose of the conference was to create action plans
and take the message back to the schools and the students all created action plans.
4
