D. Kalei reported that the Hawaii Community College has been very supportive with the <br />Olaa Community Center. The Olaa Community Center is open Monday to Friday,from <br />1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Their service is to provide service to latch key kids who dont have any <br />place to go. They also offer space to community organizations such as Parents, Inc. <br />and Alcoholics Anonymous. Space is also offered free of charge just to bring services <br />into the area. The center has been staffed purely by volunteers. Plans in the future are <br />to redevelop the center with approval from the Department of Education. Currently, <br />they are applying for a $800,000 grant. Furthermore, she started a substance abuse <br />counseling program in which practicum students will be used. <br />J. Balberde-Kamalii recommended that D. Kalei contact Kamehameha Schools as a <br />community partner. She also recommended Jay Kimura from the Prosecutors Office <br />since they have a Youth Group program. <br />L.GuluzzysuggestedthatD.KaleipreparepressreleasesabouttheOlaaCommunity <br />Center. Newland reported that she attended an Island Solutions workshop in Waikoloa <br />and she was excited to see a copy of the directory in the handouts. <br />2. Therefore, she will start up in mid June when school is over. She will <br />make sure that contact with the Charter Schools are made islandwide. Essays <br />submittedinHawaiianoranotherlanguageneedstobesubmittedinEnglish <br />also. She will try to get a more diverse group of judges. She will begin research <br />onhavingtheluncheonawardsceremonyheldinacentralizedlocationsuchas <br />Waikoloa or Waimea. She asked CSW members to provide any feedback to her. <br />L.GuluzzysuggestedmoreparticipationfromWestHawaiischoolsandoffered <br />her assistance.
