GREEN WASTE: <br />There is no green waste/mulch in Hilo currently now that the second grinder has been <br />· <br />removed. <br />Grinderwill be back in Hilo in seven to eight weeks. <br />· <br />Fencing is being installed by the Kailua-Kona Police Station to reduce wind blown litter. <br />· <br />Looking at ways to store loads of processed green waste around the island for residents <br />· <br />convenience. <br />EKO is now taking pallets at their green waste sites. <br />· <br />The request for funds to build a compost facility in West Hawai`i is being resubmitted to <br />· <br />Council. <br />Sanborn made a motion to write a letter of support and urge the Council to get it going. <br />· <br />Mayhew seconded the motion. <br />It was suggested that the letter include the departments top three priorities: <br />· <br />Composting Facility/Green waste Diversion/Biodiesel <br />o <br />Reload Building <br />o <br />Providing background on department projects. <br />o <br />The motion was amended to include the departments top three priorities and it passed <br />· <br />unanimously. <br />A commercial green waste tip fee ordinance is in place for when the composting facility is <br />· <br />built. <br />Sanborn and Erway will compose the letter with assistance from Bell and Dworsky. <br />· <br />TRANSFER STATIONS: <br />Hawi, Kailua-Kona, Waimea and Waiohinu transfer stations sustained earthquake damage. <br />· <br />FEMA will reimburse up to75% if repair plans are approved. <br />Four acres are required for an alternative (new) Waimea transfer stationsite. <br />· <br />All Solid Waste facilities will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years <br />· <br />Day. <br />RECYCLING/DIVERSION STATUS: <br />The 20% diversion rate at KRRC does not include redemption of HI5 beverage containers. <br />· <br />Kona Recycles @ Kealakehe traditional recycling rate is 7% which does not include scrap <br />· <br />metal and green waste or HI5 containers. <br />nd <br />Upcoming County Household Hazardous Waste Disposal dates are December 2 in Hilo and <br />· <br />th <br />9 in Kona. Surveys will be compiled regarding the need for additional sites around the <br />island. <br />The segregated area for earthquake E-Waste at the West Hawai`i landfill will be available <br />· <br />through December 30, 2006. <br />Peters distributed the new Recycle Hawai`i Recycle Guide and invited commission members <br />· <br />5 <br />to the Tim Wenk HI Magic Show. <br />Reynolds Recycling is now open in Hilo. <br />· <br />Treecycling chippings will be available at transfer stations from January 7 through January <br />· <br />14, 2007. <br />(attached to original minutes) <br />Wastewater Division Chiefs Report <br />th <br />TherewasminorinfiltrationduetotheOctober15earthquake. <br />· <br />TheKonaLineMaintenanceSupervisorwillretireNovember30,2006.KonaandHilo <br />· <br />combinedstaffwillassistwiththedutiesuntilareplacementishired. <br />The Deputy Division position description is being rewritten to reduce the engineering <br />· <br /> <br />
