suggested this to us--if we got them they become a useful tool if you are standing in a place at
your home, and you are walking around kind of pointing at maps and you put them all up on a
wall somewhere, but IÓm not quite sure how we would use them. Did you use them last time?
What would you think the value to us of that hard paper map would be?

MS. NAKAMOTO: We did not use the paper map with the census blocks on them. What we
used was the software. The software program had all of the information we needed in block and
population information.
CHR. SIRACUSA: Excuse me, for KarenÓs reference that is Patricia Nakamoto speaking.

MS. NAKAMOTO: Also, what we used were the topo maps. We referred a lot back to topo
maps just to find identifiable landmarks and things like that; but that was the only hard copy
maps we used were the topo maps.

MR. MELROSE: I would just suggest to the group that I understand what she is talking about. I
know in my work with maps, I like to have big things that I can walk up against, but I donÓt
know that it would be functional in our meeting, or how we would do it. Maybe we can defer
that conversation to later.

MR. MIDDLESWORTH: I would like to find out the cost. If they are not terribly costly, maybe
we could use them; put them on a flip chart. We can stand them up over in a corner of the room
and if somebody wants to see the detail, they can go over and flip one up.

MS. NAKAMOTO: We can look into what the costs of those maps are, and get the information
to you at the next meeting.

MR. MIDDLESWORTH: Thank you.

MR. MELROSE: That would be good; that would be our request thank you.

MR. MIDDLESWORTH: ThatÓs good, thank you.

CHR. SIRACUSA: Okay, if we have completed this discussion on Technical Suppo
need to vote on filing Communication 12. Do I have a motion to file Communication 12? Oh, I
see; we donÓt need a motion; we just need to take a vote.

The motion to file Communication 12
was carried by the following vote:

Ayes: Commissioners Carvalho, Kahawaiolaa,
Kanuha, Melrose, Middlesworth,
Poindexter, Ugalde, and Chair Siracusa.
Noes: None.
Absent: Commissioner Kahui.

24
