CHR. SIRACUSA: Thank you.

MS. POINDEXTER: I agree.

MR. MIDDLESWORTH: It seems to me that if this is all recorded, and preserved in
electronic form; if we are ever sued and have to go to court, you can go back and retrieve the
verbatim transcript. IÓm with Jeff; this time weÓve got 50 pages of minutes, and that is
ridiculous. There is no reason on earth that we need to have a 50 page document for each
meeting that we have.

MR. MELROSE: Can I make the suggestion that we approve the minutes today, right now, and
when we have a chance to talk to Clerk about technical support, we reintroduce the conversation.

CHR. SIRACUSA: There is a motion on the floor, and that can be discussed at
Mr. Oshiro has certainly made it clear that the County has a special interest in verbatim
transcripts. So, if no one else wants to say anything about the matter IÓll take the vote.

The motion to approve the minutes of the
April 25, 2011 HawaiÒi County Redistricting
Commission meeting was carried by the
following vote:
Ayes: Commissioners Carvalho, Kahawaiolaa,
Kanuha, Melrose, Middlesworth,
Poindexter, Ugalde, and Chair Siracusa.
Noes: None.
Absent: Commissioner Kahui.

COMMUNICATIONS
COMM. 7: SUPREME COURT OPININON REGARDING CHALLENGE TO 2001
REAPPORTIONMENT COMMISSION’S PLAN
Memo from Commission Attorney, Michael Udovic, dated May 3, 2011, transmitting a
copy of the Opinion of the Supreme Court of HawaiÒi in the case of Citizens for
Equitable Government v County of HawaiÒi, 2005.
and
COMM. 7.1 COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH LAWSUIT REGARDING 2001
REAPPORTIONMENT COMMISSION’S FINAL PLAN
Memo from Commission Attorney, Michael Udovic, dated May 4, 2011, providing
information regarding the cost associated with two separate lawsuits regarding the
Reapportionment Plan adopted by the 2001 Commission.

CHR. SIRACUSA: I should mention that these were items that members of the Commission had
requested. That has come in and I believe that it is available on the web.
7
