This will accommodate <br />minor leaks. <br />(3) supporting rods on the typical rod supported canopies <br />and the wrought iron supports of existing trussed <br />canopies should be painted for design continuity. <br />(4) The fascia of all horizontally projecting sidewalk <br />canopies should be faced with material that retains <br />design continuity. <br />(5) Where deterioration requires construction of an en- <br />tirely new canopy, the new awning design may follow <br />the original design guidelines for canopies (positively` <br />sloped overhangs without iron supports) as long as <br />desigq continuity is retained between adjacent build- <br />ings: <br />(f) Roofs <br />(1) The original roof shape and parapet walls shall be <br />restored and preserved if - sufficient to protect from <br />the weather. <br />(2) Roof design shall allow adequate drainage and the { <br />roofing material should provide a weather -tight cover- <br />ing for the structure. <br />(3) The original type of roofing material should be <br />retained whenever possible. In Hilo, this often consists <br />of corrugated metal painted red, green or asphaltic <br />black; and tile roofs. <br />(4) Where necessary, new material that duplicates the <br />old in composition, size, shape, color and texture <br />may be allowed to replace deteriorated roof coverings. <br />(g) Windows Doors and Entry Wa s <br />(1) Original window and door openings, frames, sash. <br />glass, doors, lintels, sills, architraves, hardware, <br />awnings and shutters should be retained, repaired <br />and preserved, where they contribute to the architec- <br />tural and historic character of the building. <br />3 <br />(2) Recessed storefront entries should be retained. <br />Placement of colored and /or textured paving in these <br />entries is encouraged. <br />(3) Missing or irreparable windows _within significant <br />'.m <br />
