Additional Definitions <br />ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act <br />of 1990): A civil rights law that <br />prohibits discrimination based on <br />disability, and requires modifications <br />to public space at the local and <br />state level that ensure accessibility <br />and enjoyment by all people (ex: <br />wheelchair access rams, curb cuts, <br />sidewalk width etc.). <br />Boulevard: A broad, well -paved and <br />landscaped thoroughfare. <br />Building Height: The vertical distance <br />above a reference datum measured <br />to the highest point of the coping of <br />a flat roof, or to the deck line of a <br />mansard roof, or to the average <br />height of the highest gable of a <br />pitched or hipped roof. <br />Business Improvement District (BID): <br />A public - private partnership in which <br />businesses within a defined area pay <br />an additional tax or fee to fund <br />improvements within that district's <br />boundaries. <br />Canopy: A permanent roofed <br />structure attached to and supported <br />by a building or "free standing" and <br />projecting over public property. <br />Carbon Footprint: A measure of the <br />impact our activities have on the <br />environment; it considers the amount <br />of greenhouse gases produced <br />directly and indirectly through <br />burning of fossil fuels for electricity, <br />heating, transportation, food, <br />production, etc. <br />Character: A set of qualities that <br />make a place, such as a town, <br />distinctive, unique, and rich. It is <br />what attracts people to a place or <br />what connects people to a place. <br />Character can be defined through <br />architecture, natural setting, <br />geography, physical landscape, and <br />people and their culture. <br />Civic: A term used for all things <br />belonging or related to the <br />citizenship or public affairs of a <br />community. <br />Climate Change: A dynamic <br />concept that focuses on changes in <br />long -term weather patterns (e.g. <br />temperature, rainfall, sea level), that <br />has likely intensified from human <br />activities, and global warming. <br />Co- housing: A type of intentional <br />community composed of private <br />homes and an expanse of shared <br />facilities and responsibilities (child <br />care, gardening, etc.). Co- housing <br />entails a strong emphasis on <br />creating community, and most seek <br />to develop multi - generational <br />communities. <br />Community Garden: A planned <br />green space within a neighborhood - <br />privately - or publicly owned lot, <br />where the land is managed and <br />maintained by active participation <br />from the surrounding community, <br />wherein production is diversified, <br />including ornamental plants, fruits, <br />vegetables, herbs, and other edible <br />produce. <br />Curb Cuts: A ramp leading smoothly <br />down from a sidewalk to a street, <br />placed at intersections to allow <br />pedestrians using wheelchairs, <br />strollers, walkers, etc. to move on or <br />off the sidewalk without difficulty. <br />EDH 2025: 5 -Year Action Plan Update 2 1 Page <br />
