Public Plaza: A carefully landscaped <br />space or square with room for <br />pedestrians, that is open and <br />accessible to all citizens, which may <br />be bounded by mercantile <br />establishments. <br />Public Space: An area or place that <br />is open and accessible to all citizens, <br />including publicly owned lands such <br />as parks, squares, and sidewalks. <br />Public Squares: An open area <br />commonly found in the heart of a <br />traditional town used for community <br />gatherings and public assembly. A <br />public square may be in the form of <br />a park or open space area with <br />minimal structural components that <br />encourages community <br />development. <br />Sense of Place: Anchored by <br />features and characteristics of a <br />place and carried as an imprint or <br />memory by those familiar with the <br />particular place. <br />Streetscape: The space between the <br />buildings on either side of a street <br />that defines its character. The <br />elements of a streetscape include: <br />building frontage /fagade, <br />landscaping, sidewalks, street <br />paving, street furniture, signs, <br />awnings, street lighting, etc. <br />Sustainability: A sustainable <br />Downtown Hilo is one that meets the <br />needs of those of the present <br />without compromising the needs <br />and opportunities of future <br />generations. Embracing the ethics <br />of sustainability guides us towards an <br />evaluation of our economy, our <br />ecological footprint, and our <br />personal health. <br />Universal Design Standards: A <br />relatively new paradigm that strives <br />to produce buildings, products and <br />environments that are useful and <br />effective for people of all abilities, <br />while recognizing the importance of <br />appealing design. <br />Zero Front Yard Development: A <br />development setback requirement <br />where restriction requires that a <br />building abut a front lot line.
