"On the Road Again"

Yes, the Foster Grandparents took in
Some interesting sites and gained new knowledge during the recent
DOE School Spring Recess

Kathy Arnold and Rudy Serain offered a very
helpful reading workshop held at Hilo Union
School Library. Many children's books were
available to peruse. The FG's each read a book
and shared how they would use it with students
in their classroom.

The celebration, honoring King Kalakaua, was
enjoyed — also the day of the Merrie Monarch
Parade.

Lorraine Godoy, second from the left on the
back row, spoke with the FG's about the
many services offered the community by
HCEOC.

Behind the scenes at KTA Superstore
The bakery, the meat 'market', the coool
vegetable and fruit 'room' and the large
warehouse were all on the tour. To see how a
large supermarket operates was very
enlightening.

The 'sites and sounds' of Hilo Harbor proved to
be fun, interesting, but also serious. Mr. David
Waldran, head of Harbor Security, spoke,
showed a video and gave a guided walking tour
of the premises. Since 9/11 many new security
measures are in place to keep the Harbor 'safe
and sound'.

A selection of veeeery expensive sports
cars was parked at the Harbor. These were
on hand for the 'rich and famous' to take
them for a spin around the island. The FG's
could only afford a photo with a car.

Kupuna News 3 July - September 2008
