BIKEWAYS FOR HILO <br />PHASE I - This phase connects most of the recreational and <br />shopping areas, concentrating on central Hilo. It 'allows access <br />to the beach area, the University, Community College, Kaiko' o <br />Mall, Downtown, Hilo Shopping Center, Wai 1 oa State Park, and. <br />H o o lu lu Park. <br />Part 1 <br />Manono Street -- A bicycle lane is recommended for both <br />sides of Manono Street between Pii lani and Lei 1 ani Streets. <br />There are sidewalks on both sides of Manono Street from <br />Pi i lani Street to Kamehameha Avenue, and th-es a should be <br />converted to bike /walk paths. The remaining section from <br />Lei lani Street to East Kawi li Street will be designated <br />as a bicycle route to complete the bikeway. <br />Kamehameha Avenue - A bike /walk path for the makai side <br />and a combination bicycle lane and bike /walk path for the <br />mauka side are planned. The makai side will continue to <br />allow parking for access to the park area adjacent to <br />Kamehameha Avenue. The mauka side requires removal of <br />parking up to Honiron, where parking will be retained for <br />employees, <br />Downtown - New one -way circulation of the downtown plan <br />was implemented on August 101, 1975. Bicycle routes <br />should be designated along the one -way streets of Keawe <br />and Ki noo 1 e in accordance with the new circulation. <br />Puueo - Wainaku Street sidewalks should be converted to <br />bike /walk paths to allow access to the town for residents <br />in the Puueo area. <br />Part 2 <br />West Kawili Street This street is heavily used by the <br />University students especially those living in Ash Housing. <br />The shoulders should be widened for bicycle lanes on both <br />sides of the street, and may be shared with pedestrians. <br />
