GUTTELING/MAEDA: I do.
DUERR: Yes.
HENKEL: Thank you. Please, we'll start with the gentleman on the right, and use the
microphone. State your name and where you're from, and you have three minutes.
MAEDA: Gary Maeda. I live at 100 Honoli`i Place. I've been there for about 18 years with my
wife, and currently the, my understanding is it's a residential area, and this is why my wife had
purchased the property. For quiet enjoyment. And, with all the grandkids and great grandkids
coming by, you know, practically every weekend, my wife is, and myself, concerned about the
safety of them running around our property right at the radius of, across from that proposed
B&B. And, you know, we've, I've never, or we've never met the owner. Never came around to
introduce herself if that's who she is, you know, Jan Valdez. And, because of all of these
concerns, and especially for my wife, that suffers from extreme anxiety and under medical care.
Anything like this, even now currently, is just stressing her out. We need to consult with her
medical primary care doctor, and we have to be taking anti -anxiety medication, and this is not
good for her. Not good for me. And, because of all the grandkids coming over constantly, very,
very concerned. And, for one thing, it's not a business district. It's a residential district, and I
think we deserve the quiet enjoyment that the reason why we purchased that area in that
cul-de-sac. That's all I have right now.
HENKEL: Thank you. Cherlita, would you state your name, and speak into the microphone and
where you're from.
GUTTELING: Thank you for allowing me to come and speak to you today. My name is
Cherlita Gutteling, and I live at 153 Honoli`i Place, two houses down from the proposed Valdez
bed and breakfast.
I have lived there since 1994, so I know the character of our neighborhood very well. We are a
sleepy, quiet, little residential cul-de-sac with an extremely narrow lane for going in and out.
The photo you have shows how tight it is. Sets a limited space for cars and people. Two
vehicles meeting have to go onto the grass to get by, off the pavement.
There is a single bed and breakfast operation four houses down from us, and I actually supported
the owner, Yvonne Bjornen, when she applied for a permit for such many years ago. Supporting
the B&B permit for Yvonne was a decision I now regret very much. The current owners of the
B&B are a nice family also, but he always parks his truck on the road whenever he has guests,
and it makes the road even more narrow than usual. When it rains, it is actually dangerous as it
forces cars meeting off the road and onto the grass, leaving wheel ruts and mud everywhere,
ruining the lawns.
I'm now further upset to learn that there has been an additional recent bed and breakfast
operation going on by Mrs. Valdez without a permit. We received from Ms. Valdez informing
us of this application, but it was phrased in such a way as to imply this was—this was an
expansion of an existing legal situation, not an illegal, unpermitted operation.
