Communication No. 2018-02 <br />vi. Mauna Lani intersection: Major safety issue. Resorts and landowners are <br />unwilling to pay for improvements. Mauna Lani parties would like the State <br />to improve the intersection. <br />vii. Truck runaway ramps: Donald Smith investigating potential sites along <br />Kawaihae Road. Funding is available for the project, and will go forward. <br />viii. Kawaihae Harbor Road: Donald Smith is meeting with Rep. Evans and local <br />businesses to discuss options and alternatives for the Akoni Pule <br />intersection. Crosswalks, stop signs, etc. <br />ix. Surveying seen near Waikoloa Road and Mamalahoa Highway intersection: <br />DOT carrying out basic repairs and survey work for data collection. General <br />upkeep along the highway in that area. <br />Police: <br />1. Officer Thomas Koyanagi reported: <br />a. South Kohala CPOs will be rotating their attendance at SKTSC meetings. <br />b. Ironman season saw many traffic related injuries. Some quite serious, but no <br />fatalities. <br />c. Reviewed the October Traffic Report with the committee. See Appendix for the <br />October Traffic Report. <br />d. Ragnar Race impact: Much improved compared to last year's race. Better <br />community outreach, and good use of special duty officers at key intersections. <br />Old Business: <br />New Business: <br />1. Cub Scouts: <br />a. Spencer Vanderpool introduced his Cub Scout troop. The Cub Scouts were <br />interested in attending the meeting in hopes of learning about community meetings <br />and organizations. <br />b. The Cub Scouts asked the following questions to the committee. The Chair and <br />fellow committee members replied in kind. <br />i. What is the role of the South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee in the <br />community? <br />ii. What is the Chairman's role within the committee and the responsibilities <br />as a community leader? Are you a County employee? <br />iii. With the recent installation of the pedestrian signal near Longs Waimea has <br />traffic improved? <br />iv. What is SKTSC's role in the installation and replacement of traffic safety <br />markings, reflectors, and signs? <br />v. Are there future plans for the installation of new stoplights in Waimea? <br />vi. How can traffic be improved in the Luala'i subdivision, especially during <br />Halloween? <br />2. Officer Nominations: <br />a. Current officers in good standing as stated by the committee bylaws shall be <br />appointed for their positions if they so desire. <br />b. Current Vice Chair Joyce O'Connor requested to step down from her position. <br />c. Chair James Hustace and Treasurer Marianne Falkner were nominated with <br />unanimous consent from the floor. <br />d. No other nominations were heard for officer positions. <br />e. Officer elections will be held at the December committee meeting. <br />f. Necessary to fill the vacant positions. <br />3. Mamalahoa Highway widening project (P -3905B): <br />a. The Chair incorporated a projected presentation to discuss and share with the <br />committee the Mamalahoa Highway widening project. <br />
