Communication No. 2018-02 vi. Mauna Lani intersection: Major safety issue. Resorts and landowners are unwilling to pay for improvements. Mauna Lani parties would like the State to improve the intersection. vii. Truck runaway ramps: Donald Smith investigating potential sites along Kawaihae Road. Funding is available for the project, and will go forward. viii. Kawaihae Harbor Road: Donald Smith is meeting with Rep. Evans and local businesses to discuss options and alternatives for the Akoni Pule intersection. Crosswalks, stop signs, etc. ix. Surveying seen near Waikoloa Road and Mamalahoa Highway intersection: DOT carrying out basic repairs and survey work for data collection. General upkeep along the highway in that area. Police: 1. Officer Thomas Koyanagi reported: a. South Kohala CPOs will be rotating their attendance at SKTSC meetings. b. Ironman season saw many traffic related injuries. Some quite serious, but no fatalities. c. Reviewed the October Traffic Report with the committee. See Appendix for the October Traffic Report. d. Ragnar Race impact: Much improved compared to last year's race. Better community outreach, and good use of special duty officers at key intersections. Old Business: New Business: 1. Cub Scouts: a. Spencer Vanderpool introduced his Cub Scout troop. The Cub Scouts were interested in attending the meeting in hopes of learning about community meetings and organizations. b. The Cub Scouts asked the following questions to the committee. The Chair and fellow committee members replied in kind. i. What is the role of the South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee in the community? ii. What is the Chairman's role within the committee and the responsibilities as a community leader? Are you a County employee? iii. With the recent installation of the pedestrian signal near Longs Waimea has traffic improved? iv. What is SKTSC's role in the installation and replacement of traffic safety markings, reflectors, and signs? v. Are there future plans for the installation of new stoplights in Waimea? vi. How can traffic be improved in the Luala'i subdivision, especially during Halloween? 2. Officer Nominations: a. Current officers in good standing as stated by the committee bylaws shall be appointed for their positions if they so desire. b. Current Vice Chair Joyce O'Connor requested to step down from her position. c. Chair James Hustace and Treasurer Marianne Falkner were nominated with unanimous consent from the floor. d. No other nominations were heard for officer positions. e. Officer elections will be held at the December committee meeting. f. Necessary to fill the vacant positions. 3. Mamalahoa Highway widening project (P -3905B): a. The Chair incorporated a projected presentation to discuss and share with the committee the Mamalahoa Highway widening project.
