In 2005, the fire <br />2 department was reorganized and titles were changed <br />3 because of increased complexity and growth of the <br />4 department. Although the duties didn't change, <br />5 assistant chiefs were renamed battalion chiefs and were <br />6 downgraded from EM 07 to EM 05. New assistant chief <br />7 positions were established at the EM 07 level <br />8 supervising multiple battalion chiefs and other <br />9 programs. At the time, it was stated that this <br />10 situation was only temporary, but the issue has never <br />11 been addressed. <br />12 There is a proposal currently before the <br />13 <br />mayor that <br />would <br />upgrade the assistant chief positions <br />14 <br />from EM 05 <br />to EM <br />07 and raise their pay to $132,744 <br />15 <br />plus contractual <br />pay already in place. Also before the <br />16 <br />mayor is a <br />proposal <br />to upgrade the battalion chiefs <br />17 <br />from EM 03 <br />to EM <br />05, upping the pay to $122,748 plus <br />18 <br />contractual pay <br />already in place. If these <br />19 rectifications of past inequities are enacted, the <br />20 inversion for the chief and deputy chief will be much <br />21 worse. In 2016, 26 fire department employees at the <br />22 rank of captain or above made more than the chief; 21 <br />23 of them were captains. 31 employees made more than the <br />24 deputy chief; 26 of them were captains.
