The
restoration was done with care and respect for the sacred nature
of the area.
Daughters of Hawaii has a special interest in this site. We have
been stewards of the Kamemehameha III birthsite since 1914, when
a tablet marking the birthing stone was dedicated at a ceremony
attended by Queen Liliuokalani, Prince Kuhio, and our then
Regent, among others.
Our mission as Daughters is to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture,
and preserve Hawaiian language and place sites. We applaud the
extensive renovation of the area which preserves the historic
integrity of this treasured area of the island of Hawaii.
We feel that integral to the success of the entire project is
elimination of parking along the wall fronting the site. We
support the ordinance for the following reasons:
1. The previous wall sustained continuous damage due to vehicles
parking alongside the wall. This problem will reoccur.
2. The site now presents a place of visual beauty and historical
interest. Car and trucks parked adjacent to the site would
obstruct the view from those who wish to view the site while
driving along the road and from those who walk down the roadway.
.~z~.~._..,,,_
QW P~
~ ~ f,
~ !lDAY 0 b i~997
C2z4. ~Cz_._.__......
