STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 684 16 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING THE COUNTY TO JOIN MALAMA 808 AND <br /> ENCOURAGE THE USE OF LITTERATI, AS RECOMMENDED BY THE HAWAII <br /> ISLAND PACKAGING SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE STAKEHOLDERS TASK <br /> FORCE. <br /> WHEREAS, the Hawai`i Island Packaging Sustainability Initiative Stakeholders <br /> (HIPSIS) Task Force is comprised of participants from divergent backgrounds and interests as <br /> designated by Resolution No. 565-16, Draft 3; and <br /> WHEREAS, the HIP SIS Task Force completed the third of its three scheduled meetings <br /> on October 6, 2016; and <br /> WHEREAS, the HIPSIS Task Force agrees that litter left by visitors and residents along <br /> the roadsides, parks, beaches, and other locations detract from the beauty of Hawaii Island; and <br /> WHEREAS, such litter may be unsanitary and may ultimately find its way to the ocean, <br /> which is harmful to marine life; and <br /> WHEREAS, the HIPSIS Task Force agrees that the County should join Malama 808, a <br /> private sector program, whose mission is to promote best practices for litter prevention to keep <br /> our land and waters clean; and <br /> WHEREAS, the County's participation in Malama 808 (www.malama808.org) can serve <br /> as a model for Hawai`i Island restaurants and businesses to participate and join more than 100 <br /> restaurants and businesses in Malama 808's pledge to: <br /> - Keep trash control at the forefront of our management practices and conduct regular <br /> reviews of trash control procedures. <br /> - Survey our establishments to ensure that there are enough receptacles, and they are in the <br /> correct places to make disposing trash and recyclables convenient and effective. <br /> - Ensure that trash and recycling receptacles are appropriately covered to prevent trash <br /> from flying away. <br /> - Assess the trash that's collected on and around our establishments, and when there is a <br /> problem with trash escaping, take steps to correct the problem. <br /> - Educate our employees and customers on the importance of making sure trash is <br /> managed properly. <br /> - Consult best management practices for trash control and adapt them to our local needs; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Litterati is a website program (http://www.litterati.org/) founded by Jeff <br /> Kirschner that encourages people to send digital photographs identifying the type and location of <br /> litter to the literati interne data base; and <br />
