Additionally, it is projected that this project will generate additional transit trips within the resort area. The MTA is requesting consideration of an annual on-going funding support to implement a seven day a week shuttle in conjunction with other resorts and shopping area. Such funding would be provided conditional upon receiving funding from the other benefactors from a resort shuttle, which would be fully integrated into the Hele- On system. It is envisioned that future residents of Ho`omalu will include many persons who work within Waikoloa Beach Resort or at other area centers of employment, including other resorts. Thus, there could be some demand for inter-resort shuttling for work, but a shuttle service would conceivably serve area resort visitors as much or more than Ho`omalu residents,who are less likely than visitors to regularly patronize the regional resort commercial areas. On the other hand, by providing an opportunity for a substantial number of workers who may currently have to commute long distances to jobs at Waikoloa Beach Resort or other places of employment nearby, it is hoped that Ho`omalu may reduce the need for long-distance commutes along Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway and other regional throughfares.
