WHEREAS, Resolution 826 -08, A Resolution Urging the Director of the Environmental <br />Management to Develop an Ordinance and Implement a Plan to Prohibit Food, Paper, and <br />Compostable Organics from Hawaii County Landfills by 2012 was approved by Council on <br />January 23, 2009; and <br />WHEREAS, landfills have a finite amount of space. The South Hilo Landfill is projected <br />to reach maximum capacity within a few years. The Pu'uanahulu Landfill has more available air <br />space at this time, but it will also reach capacity at some point in the future; and <br />WHEREAS, landfills are expensive to maintain. They must comply with strict <br />Department of Health (DOH) requirements while in service and must be monitored for at least <br />30 years after they are closed.
